The First of the clan Temples was Ilayathangudi (Ilayattrangudi) and it is 25 km
from Karaikudi on the road to Karaikudi, passing Nemam, Keelasivalpatti and Avinipatti
on the way. It is said to have been granted to the Nagarathar in 707 A.D. Ilayathangudi’s
main deity is Kailasanathar and his consort is Nithyakalyani. Legend has it that
this was the resting place of the gods and explains the villages name with a syllable
break-up as follows: Ilaippu- tiredness, attru – removal and gudi- place. |
The old Perumal Temple here has 24 stone in scriptions and the Adikesava Perumal
Temple has five, the 29 being discovered in 1926. Ilayathangudi temple has over
6500 Pullis, amounting to a membership of around 26,000 persons in 64 villages.
But the congregation here is divided into seven subsects, each of which consider
itself a separate clan, The subsects are 1.Okkoor – Kudiyar, 2.Arumbakilaiyarana Pattinasamiyar
3.Perumarudur – Kudiyar, 4.Kalanivasal – Kudiyar, 5.KINGINIKUR – Kudiyar, 6.Keriyasethur –
Kudiyar, 7.Sirusethur – Kudiyar
