About 5 KM from Karaikudi on the road to Mathur is the Iluppakudi temple Located in an area which once abounded with Iluppai trees and which still has several of them temple's origins, according to Puranic legend, are in a request made by Siva, who appeared in a dream to a local chieftain. Siva, making the request for a temple to be built where the chieftain lived, presented him with a soodamani, a precious stone. The nearby village is know as Soodamanipuram. The Mail deity here is Thanthonrieswarar and his consort is Soundaranayaki. The Temple has 30 bronzes and is rich with wall paintings of the TiruvillaiyadalPuranam. Thirteen of the bronzes belong to the 12th - 13th Century Pandya era.In the Dakshinamoorthy mandapam is some excellent sculpture, including a number of lions in whose open mouths are sculpted balls that roll but do not fall out.Iluppakudi has a little over 2700 Pullis,a membership of something over 11,000 persons in 31 villages.The temple was granted to the chettiars in 714 A.D. and its first renovation by them was in 1842.
